Cymbal, Women's Golf Take Second at Liberty Leagues

VERONA, N.Y. – Sophomore Alexandra Cymbal tied for second place individually to lead the Union College women's golf team to a second-place finish at the two-day Liberty League Championships, held on Saturday and Sunday at Turning Stone Resort's Shenendoah Golf Club.

The Dutchwomen shot a 363 on day two of the weekend, finishing the two-day event with a score of 731. Ithaca College captured its first conference title with a two-day score of 679, while William Smith College placed third with an 837.

Only one person posted a lower two-day score than Cymbal, that person being Ithaca's Peyton Greco, who earned individual medalist honors with a 164 after rounds of 83 and 81.

Cymbal finished in a three-way tie for second with Mary Gersec and Sophia Israel of Ithaca and was the only non-Bomber to crack the top-five. Following her round of 88 yesterday, Cymbal moved six spots up the leaderboard with an 85 on Sunday, shaking off a double bogey on the par-four 1st hole to post nothing higher than bogey the rest of the way. She went out with a seven-over 43 and then came in with a six-over 42 to complete her round.

Four other Dutchwomen finished in the top-10 this weekend as well. Senior Juls Sweet closed out her Union career with a round of 92 on Sunday, finishing seventh overall with a two-day score of 186. Sophomore Avery Clavel finished eighth with a weekend score of 190, followed closely by classmate Colleen Buckley at 191 and junior Kiara Beckham at 194.

Even without a full roster and limited time on the course, the Dutchwomen still managed to average 356.2 strokes per round in Spring 2021, the third-lowest scoring average in program history. The team is slated to return four of its five spring letterwinners again in 2021-22.
